Games and Scoring:  Two types of games are played each week:  Individual competition and a weekly contest.  Although you have a partner, they are more like your cart mate or teammate. Some weeks the games are team oriented.  But throughout the league, you are playing weekly individual matches.  Objective:  The league member accumulating the most points at the end of the season will win a $75 gift certificate to be redeemed at the South Grove Gift Shop. The league member with the second best point showing will win a $50 certificate.

   Individual Game

•              Each member is assigned either as an “A” or “B” player.  This assignment is randomly made and not based on skill.

•              During the course of the league, Player A will compete in individual medal play against the other A-Players, and Player B will compete against other B-Players.

•              After 12 weeks, Player A will have competed against all A-Players, and will now begin to compete against the B-Players.  And vice versa for Player B.

•              Please record the actual strokes per hole per player on the scorecard.  At the end of play, tally the gross score per player.  (See Example Scorecard on Page 3.)

•              Subtract the players’ handicap from their gross score and compare the adjusted scores, (the net score).  Determine which player won the individual match.

•              Winners will receive 2 points for the match; ties receive 1 point; and a loss receives 0 pt.

•              If a player is unable to make the match or find a substitute, the player forfeits the match and 0 points are recorded.  His/her opponent will automatically receive 2 points.

•              Cards are to be scored, attested and dated before turning in.

•              One scorecard per foursome will be given to Mark or Ray.

•              In the case of a tie for either first or second place, the prize money will be divided equally among the winners.  If there are 3 or more members tied for first place, the first and second place money will be combined and divided equally among the winners.

Bye Matches

For 2024, matches with “Bye” team will be played as Player vs. Player (play your partner)

Weekly Games

•              Weekly contests are listed on your tee time schedule, plus it will be listed on the weekly standings sheet.  The games will either be “individual” or “team” oriented.

•              You and your partner will play different teams each week.

•              All prizes for competitions will be awarded the following week after the competition.

General Rules that Govern

•              Tee times are to be adhered to.  Please do not swap tee times with other groups.

•              If you are running late, or a member of your foursome is not present, you are to tee-off at your scheduled time.  Late players may join the match in progress and must take the maximum for each hole missed.

•              A maximum of four (4) strokes over par is on any hole been set in order to keep play moving.  After reaching the maximum, players are instructed to pick up at that point and record the allowable maximum score, which is par + 4 strokes.

•              Winter rules are played.  The ball may be rolled to within 6", but no closer to the hole.  If your ball comes to a rest in standing water, or in area where no grass exists, you may move the ball laterally to where grass exists.

•              No mulligans are allowed.

•              A "whiff" counts as a stroke.

•              If you go out-of-bound, one penalty stroke should be taken and place another ball where ball went out of bounds.  You are allowed 2 clubs links if your ball comes to rest next to the fence.

•              If a ball lies in a drainage area of the fairway or ground under repair, you may move the ball but no closer to the hole without penalty.

•              If you hit the wrong ball: Two penalty strokes are incurred for playing any ball other than your own.  On the green:  If your ball hits another ball or the removed flagstick when you are putting, a two-stroke penalty is incurred.  The ball that was hit should be placed as near as possible to its original position.

•              Be ready to play your shot at all times.  Play ready golf.

Substitutes

•              League members are responsible for finding a substitute if they are unable to make their match.

•              A sub list will be provided for your use, but you are not restricted to it.  You may ask anyone.

•              New members and new subs will use the 80% Rule until 3 scores have been posted in the league.  (See 80% Rule Methodology below.)

•              The score of match might not be known until the next week following the match.

Handicap System

•              All returning members of will use their handicap from the end of last year’s league.

•              Returning members’ handicaps will be calculated using the 8 or More Scores Handicap Methodology. (See Page 3).   This means that last year’s posted scores will continue to (haunt you) form of the basis of your handicap for this season.  Think of it as a scrolling window of scores, with the oldest score being dropped from calculations each week.

•              Handicaps will be calculated weekly, and no less than bi-weekly.

•              The maximum handicap is 27 (3 strokes per hole).

•              The handicap will be found next to the person’s name on the weekly standings sheet.

New members

•              New members' handicap will be initially established by the 60-70-80% Rule.

•              60-70-80% Rule Methodology:  For example, the new member (or sub without an established handicap) shoots a 40.  Take par away from 40; 40-35=5. Multiply 5 times 0.6 or 0.7 or 0.80. For example, 5 x 0.80 = 4.  The new member’s (or sub’s) handicap is 4 for that round.

•              The 60-70-80% rule will be utilized until a minimum of 3 scores are posted in the league.

•              Once 3 scores are posted, handicaps will be determined based on the following:

How is a Handicap Determined?

Number of Posted Scores

0                                  60% of total strokes over par (60% rule)

1                                  70% of total strokes over par (70% rule)

2                                  80% of total strokes over par (80% rule)

3                                  95% of average strokes over par of three (3) posted scores

4                                  95% of average strokes over par of four (4) posted scores

5                                  95% of average strokes over par of five (5) posted scores

6                                  95% of average strokes over par of five (5) posted scores

7                                  95% of average strokes over par of five (5) posted scores

8                                  Method described below

More than 8               Last eight (8) scores using method described below

8 or More Scores Handicap Methodology

1.  Take the eight (8) most recent scores.

3.  Average the five (5) lowest scores.

4.  Subtract the par, which is 35, and multiply by 95% (0.95) to get the handicap.

5.  Round up or down to the nearest whole number (.5 or greater rounds up, .499 or less round down.)
